“Autumn Harmonies” Choral Concert Presented Oct. 26 at CSU, Chico

CSU, Chico's choral ensembles will perform its fall concert, Autumn Harmonies, Friday, Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre. Autumn Harmonies will feature folksong settings from around the world and songs of praise and prayer.

Performing choirs will include the Chamber Singers, Acappella Choir, and the University Chorus, all conducted by Dr. David Scholz, Director of Choral Activities at CSU, Chico. This will be Scholz's first concert with the choirs at Chico State and is highly anticipated.

"Audience members will leave the concert having heard a wide variety of quality choral music performed with great technical skill and musicality. Naturally, we hope that people will leave the hall that evening humming a tune or two as well," said Scholz.

At the conclusion of the concert, all 150 singers from the three choirs will join together to sing several numbers as the Choral Union. Selections will include the sonorous harmonies of "Shenandoah," arranged by James Erb, and Mack Wilberg's raucous arrangement of "Old Joe Clark."

Folksongs performed by the individual choirs will include DeCormier's arrangement of the lovely Korean tune "Ahrirang," the brash "South Australia" of Stephen Leek, and the playful arrangement of the Norwegian "Pål På Haugen" by Brad Ellingboe.

"While we will focus on folksong settings for the concert, we didn't want to limit the literature performed to only folksongs," said Scholz.

Songs of praise and prayer form the theme of the other pieces on the concert. Motets by Heally Willan, Randall Thompson's "Alleluia," "Sing Ye Praises" of Aaron Copland, and "Light Everlasting" by St. Olaf composer Olaf Christiansen will be featured.

"I think audience members will also enjoy hearing a beautiful arrangement of the 'Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi' written by David Childs, and several different settings of the 'Lord's prayer' —  one by Igor Stravinsky and a gorgeous setting by the French composer Maurice Duruflé," noted Scholz.

Scholz said the concert is being dedicated to Music Education Professor Debra Reinhardt, who passed away in a car accident on September 25th, 2007. To honor her memory, the Chamber Singers will perform "A Clear Midnight," written by  Scholz and dedicated to Dr. Reinhardt.
