Becky Watner of the Downtown Chico Business Association sent me this today:

"The spectacular City Plaza will glow with the joy of Christmas at the annual Community Tree Lighting scheduled for Friday, December 7th beginning at 6pm. The event takes place rain or shine.

A display of holiday cheer is planned for the Tree Lighting – making it one of Chico's favorite traditions year after year. The Yule Logs will provide entertainment before the ceremony begins – their original style is always a crowd pleaser. Once the ceremony is underway a musical program featuring the Sound of the Foothills and the Children's Choir of Chico will delight onlookers.

City of Chico Mayor Andy Holcombe will address the crowd and just in time to light the tree Santa Claus will arrive aboard Chico Fire Department's antique engine. Following the ceremony Santa will visit youngsters, making his list of all the good boys and girls.

The Community Tree Lighting is produced by the Downtown Chico Business Association and funded in part by the City of Chico. Generous sponsors include: KNVN-TV24, KHSL-TV12, 95.7 KALF, 93.9 KFM, Club 96.7, and 107 The Point.

Let Your Children Do The Shopping!

Thank you, Megan, of the Chico Mother's Club, for sending this reminder my way:

"Every year Chico Nursery School has shopping days for children. Bring your kids and let them shop for holiday gifts for the whole family. They get to choose from a wide variety of handmade items. Personal shoppers will assist your child in selecting gifts. Each gift costs $2.00 and is individually wrapped. While the kids shop you can participate in the silent auction and bake sale.

Shopping days are this Friday and Saturday. Friday, November 30 from 2pm-7pm and Saturday, December 1 from 9am-2pm. Chico Nursery School is located at 1190 E. 1st Avenue.

For those that don't know about Chico Nursery School, it is a parent participation preschool. There are two programs, a Tuesday-Thursday program for 3 and 4-year-olds, and a Monday-Wednesday- Friday program for 4 and 5-year-olds. Each day, they offer a variety of different fun activities: creative art,
music, storytelling, dramatic play, cognitive games and outdoor play. Each activity is presented and supervised by an adult. Children are free to choose their own activities. There are currently openings in the two classes so come by and check it out at the shopping days or call the director Jessi Wood at 891-1723.

Hope to see many of you and your little ones at shopping days.

Get your tickets to "Glorious Sounds of the Season"

I was just sent this from the Chico State School of the Arts Publicity Office:

"CSU, Chico's Department of Music and the School of the Arts get the holiday season off to a resounding start with the annual Glorious Sounds of the Season concert. Proceeds from the series of concerts go towards music scholarships for CSU, Chico students. Presented December 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m. and December 9 at 2 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre, Glorious Sounds of the Season has become a Chico-area holiday tradition. Sold-out performances have become the norm the past several years.

"We strongly suggest that anyone wanting to attend one of the concerts should buy their tickets in advance," said concert coordinator David Scholz. "It is likely that tickets may not be available at the door, and we would hate to have to turn anyone away."

The Glorious Sounds of the Season concerts employ many areas of the Music Department and includes student, faculty, and community performers. "This is a unique concert in that the audience will hear such a wide variety of musical performances all in one night," said Scholz. "In addition to pieces presented by individual ensembles as well as soloists, there will be sections of the concerts where concert-goers will hear all of the performers at once. And of course there will be opportunities for the audience to perform themselves on several classic holiday tunes where the audience members are encouraged to sing along."

Works being performed span the entire holiday season music spectrum. "There will be a wide variety of styles and types of music performed," said Scholz. "There should be something for everyone attending the concert to enjoy, whether it be traditional or contemporary, vocal or instrumental, classical, popular, or multi-cultural."

As in the past, Glorious Sounds of the Season! will "move seamlessly from ensemble to ensemble, piece to piece," according to Scholz. The numerous ensembles will set up on different parts of the stage and performance hall and music will sporadically bounce around the Harlen Adams Theatre, literally surrounding the audience in a real-life surround sound.

"This is a different type of concert experience than people are used to," said Scholz. "We are asking the audience to hold their applause until the very end of the concert so that the music takes center stage for the duration of the event."

Tickets, at $20 for all seats, are available in advance in Chico at the University Box Office (898-6333) and Terrace Pharmacy, and in Paradise at the House of Color; add $2 for tickets purchased at the door. For disability-related accommodations, please call 898-4325."

Cotton Club Diaper Service Going Out of Business

I just got an e-mail from Ruxy at the Cotton Club Diaper Service to say that Kevin, her partner, got in an accident while out delivering and broke his leg and collarbone. Now, they are having to go out of business.

I asked for her address so that anyone might send her and Kevin a card, sending good thoughts their way, especially if they used their services before. The address is: 2545 H Zanella Way, Chico, CA 95928.

Also, they are having a going out of business sale November 6-9, 10am-5pm. From Ruxy: "Everything is for sale, fixtures included, also the business if anyone wants to step in. I will be there until the end of November clearing things out. Everything will be on sale, good prices. Spread the word, thanks."

I am hoping that they will get a flood of cards to help them through this tough time. Also, consider going to their sale to help them out. Send this information along, please!

“Autumn Harmonies” Choral Concert Presented Oct. 26 at CSU, Chico

CSU, Chico's choral ensembles will perform its fall concert, Autumn Harmonies, Friday, Oct. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre. Autumn Harmonies will feature folksong settings from around the world and songs of praise and prayer.

Performing choirs will include the Chamber Singers, Acappella Choir, and the University Chorus, all conducted by Dr. David Scholz, Director of Choral Activities at CSU, Chico. This will be Scholz's first concert with the choirs at Chico State and is highly anticipated.

"Audience members will leave the concert having heard a wide variety of quality choral music performed with great technical skill and musicality. Naturally, we hope that people will leave the hall that evening humming a tune or two as well," said Scholz.

At the conclusion of the concert, all 150 singers from the three choirs will join together to sing several numbers as the Choral Union. Selections will include the sonorous harmonies of "Shenandoah," arranged by James Erb, and Mack Wilberg's raucous arrangement of "Old Joe Clark."

Folksongs performed by the individual choirs will include DeCormier's arrangement of the lovely Korean tune "Ahrirang," the brash "South Australia" of Stephen Leek, and the playful arrangement of the Norwegian "Pål På Haugen" by Brad Ellingboe.

"While we will focus on folksong settings for the concert, we didn't want to limit the literature performed to only folksongs," said Scholz.

Songs of praise and prayer form the theme of the other pieces on the concert. Motets by Heally Willan, Randall Thompson's "Alleluia," "Sing Ye Praises" of Aaron Copland, and "Light Everlasting" by St. Olaf composer Olaf Christiansen will be featured.

"I think audience members will also enjoy hearing a beautiful arrangement of the 'Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi' written by David Childs, and several different settings of the 'Lord's prayer' —  one by Igor Stravinsky and a gorgeous setting by the French composer Maurice Duruflé," noted Scholz.

Scholz said the concert is being dedicated to Music Education Professor Debra Reinhardt, who passed away in a car accident on September 25th, 2007. To honor her memory, the Chamber Singers will perform "A Clear Midnight," written by  Scholz and dedicated to Dr. Reinhardt.

Advance tickets, at $15 adults, $13 senior citizens, and $6 students/children, are available at the University Box Office, 898-6333. For disability-related accommodations, please call 898-4325. Add $2 for tickets purchased at the door.

Help us Raise Funds for Baby Adam

Baby Adam was born on Monday, September 24, 2007 to Ruth; a successful resident of the Esplanade House, a Transitional Shelter Program for Homeless Families. Ruth had a healthy pregnancy and initially mother and Baby Adam were doing well. At nine days old complications arose
with Adam's heart. We came near to losing him and he was flown to Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto on Tuesday, October 2nd and is scheduled to have open heart surgery within one to two weeks. Mother and father are with Baby Adam. Their funds are limited and the Ronald McDonald House is booked for the next three months.

The residents of the Esplanade House are having a carwash to help raise funds for the family. The carwash will take place at the Auto zone on East Avenue between 9 AM - 2 PM this Sunday, October 7th. Please come and show your support by: having your car washed, making a donation, or bringing by a non-perishable food item.

If you can help this young family, please call the Esplanade House at

More Toy Recalls

You can add some of the cute garden toys from Target to the recent toy recalls list.  According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Target announced a voluntary recall of the Happy Giddy Gardening Tools and Children's Sunny Patch Chairs due to an excessive amount of lead in the paint.

To keep on top of all the toy recalls of late, we have found a very useful toy recall finder on the BabyCenter website at www.babycenter.com/product-recall-finder.  You can look up toys by all toys recalled, or more specifically by category, time frame, or even product name.

Return of vinyl 5 a Day lunch boxes

You may have already heard about the return of the lunch boxes that were distributed through local Network for a Healthy California programs throughout the state. Three canvas lunch boxes showed elevated levels of lead and they are green with a logo reading EAT FRUITS & VEGETABLES AND BE ACTIVE. The Network is taking a precautionary step to request that all lunch boxes, both green and blue boxes are to be returned. At this time, all health promotion items developed by the CA Department of Public Health are being assessed. To dispose of your green or blue lunch box, please return it to the drop box at the OPT for Fit Kids office, located at 1311 B Mangrove Avenue. For more information, please visit www.scnutrition.org or call 345-2483.
